01The local market
A Hobart campaign should begin with the service and operating model rather than one generic detailing package. Mobile maintenance, workshop correction, coating preparation, interior work and a caravan or 4WD detail need different facilities, labour and customer expectations. A mobile enquiry needs a suburb inside the genuine travel map, authority to use the property, lawful parking, safe working space, a suitable surface and an acceptable wastewater method.
A workshop enquiry needs the actual drop-off address, vehicle-size limits, secure storage, preparation space and realistic collection window. Moonah, Glenorchy, Kingston and Cambridge can be useful service-zone prompts, but the live map and travel terms must reflect where the operator can consistently work. TasWater says any business discharging trade waste to sewer has a legal obligation to apply for permission, and it lists car wash among typical commercial trade-waste activities.
That makes the discharge and the business activity more important than a workshop label. A lease, floor drain, pressure cleaner, previous occupant or connection to sewer does not establish permission for the current detailer or process. The campaign should describe only the wash area, collection, pre-treatment, recycling and discharge arrangements the business can verify, while the operator confirms its current permission and conditions directly with TasWater.
TasWater’s commercial FAQ says trade-waste acceptance for the proposed business activity is subject to an application and inspection. It considers whether its infrastructure can collect, transport and treat the waste, whether the discharge affects recycling of treatment by-products and whether practicable minimisation, recycling and reuse options have been applied. It also says a customer may need to install or upgrade pre-treatment within an agreed timeframe.
Advertising cannot complete that site-specific assessment. A form can collect the workshop address, tenancy status, wash process and expected services, but it should not call a bay compliant or imply every coating, solvent, degreaser or contaminated liquid may follow the same path. Water use is a separate, changeable constraint.
TasWater publishes different rules for vehicle washing at each restriction stage. For example, its current table permits commercial car washes without restriction at Stage 2, while Stages 3 and 4 limit commercial vehicle washing to health, safety or other emergencies and restrict hose or high-pressure use. That table does not show which stage is currently in force at a particular Hobart address.
02The campaign setup
Before publishing availability, same-day or unrestricted-washing copy, the business should check the current restriction area and stage. Permission to use drinking water at one stage still does not decide whether wastewater may enter sewer or stormwater. City of Hobart’s household water-saving page explains why the runoff destination matters locally.
It recommends washing a private car with a bucket and sponge on a lawn or using a local car wash that recycles its wastewater, and warns that material swept into gutters reaches local waterways and the River Derwent. That is practical household advice, not automatic approval for a commercial operator to work on every lawn, verge, driveway, basement or workplace.
Mobile campaigns should ask who controls the site, the surface and slope, nearby gutters or pits, parking, water access and the operator’s containment or recovery process instead of asking the customer to declare the location suitable.
Detailing products also need a product-by-product safety check. WorkSafe Tasmania says a business must manage risks from hazardous chemicals, maintain a hazardous-chemical register, obtain the current safety data sheet for each hazardous chemical, keep it readily available and ensure containers are correctly labelled.
Not every coating, polish, cleaner or stain treatment is automatically hazardous, but the classification, storage, decanting, ventilation, ignition risk, spill response, exposure controls and disposal information must come from the product and task.
Ads should not substitute vague professional-grade wording or unsupported non-toxic, child-safe, pet-safe, allergy-safe or chemical-free claims for those controls. Photos can help triage paint and interior condition but cannot establish paint depth, clear-coat condition, prior repairs, hidden contamination or a safe correction level.
03Claims and hand-off
The Australian Consumer Law motor-vehicle sales and repairs guide hosted by Tasmania’s CBOS gives a useful scope lesson: where extra work and its cost were not disclosed before the work was performed, the consumer did not have to pay beyond the work initially agreed; permission before the extra work changed that position.
Detailing is not automatically mechanical repair, but the campaign should still document the inspected service, preparation, included surfaces, price assumptions, exclusions and approval process before adding work. Coating, correction, price and environmental claims need evidence that supports the advertisement’s overall impression. The ACCC says claims about price, benefits, qualities and performance must be accurate, truthful, based on reasonable grounds and consistent with important qualifications.
Its environmental guidance warns against broad terms such as green, environmentally friendly, eco friendly and sustainable when the genuine benefit and limits are not clear. A biodegradable ingredient, rinseless method, rainwater tank or recycling step does not prove the whole service has no environmental impact. Coating duration, warranty, gloss, correction level, turnaround and package price should identify the relevant vehicle, preparation, product, maintenance and assessment conditions.
The lead form should finish with an honest next step. Collect vehicle type, make, model, year, size, paint and interior condition, previous protection, requested service, desired result, safe photos, suburb, workshop or mobile preference, proposed site details and timing. Explain whether the team will review photos, inspect the vehicle, assess a mobile address, call the customer or prepare a conditional quote.
A submission is not a paint diagnosis, TasWater permission, wastewater approval, fixed quote, coating-warranty decision or confirmed booking. That hand-off gives a Hobart detailer enough information for a useful conversation without shifting technical, environmental or scheduling decisions into the ad.
